Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioner

What is the role of an Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioner?
Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs or ANPs) are highly-trained registered nurses with additional medical education and qualifications in order to provide advanced nursing care and to prescribe medication.
They play a crucial role in supporting and enhancing primary care services, improving patient satisfaction, and relieving pressure on GPs.
Unlike practice nurses, ACNPs have a broad scope of practice, often with specialized areas of interest, and can prescribe medication for conditions within their competence.

Which problems can ACNPs support patients with?

Similarly to the GPs, they can help with a range of minor medical issues and long-term conditions, being trained and qualified to assess, diagnose, treat patients and issue a prescription if required.

They can order any necessary investigations, refer to hospital doctors and manage various health problems, including:

  • Acute chest infection, asthma, or COPD
  • Conjunctivitis, sticky discharging eye, sty, eye infections/allergies
  • Diarrhoea, constipation, piles, vomiting
  • Dizziness, giddiness, unusual headache
  • Earache, swollen glands, oral thrush
  • Raised temperature that does not improve after treatment
  • Rashes, unexplained lumps
  • Tonsillitis, cough, sinusitis, sore throat, colds, and flu-like illnesses
  • Urinary tract infections, vaginal thrush, soreness, lump, or discharge

ANPs offer expertise in managing these conditions, providing accessible care to reduce waiting times for a GP appoitment.
